February 2012 Donor of the Month

Larry Coldiron's donation made a difference.

Larry Coldiron, principal at Raceland-Worthington High School, has been selected as the OLBH Foundation’s February Donor of the Month. Coldiron’s relationship with the OLBH Foundation dates back to 2003 when he became a faithful donor to the Stephen Mercer Endowment.

Coldiron’s relationship with the Mercers began when he first moved to the area from his native Morehead. At the time, Dan Mercer was principal at Raceland-Worthington High School when he hired Coldiron. Shortly thereafter, Coldiron became acquainted with Dan’s son Stephen.

Stephen Mercer was a unique individual afflicted with an extremely debilitating illness. The onset of his illness occurred at an early age. The many physicians, performing every test available, were baffled and Stephen never received a concrete diagnosis. Stephen’s courage and intestinal fortitude were an inspiration to those around him and led to the founding of the Stephen Mercer Endowment in his memory. The endowment provides funding for an annual $500 healthcare scholarship benefiting graduating seniors from Raceland-Worthington and Greenup high schools. Additionally, the endowment provides funds for benevolent medical care and equipment needs for children suffering from muscular, skeletal, and/or neurological diseases.

“It’s a wonderful thing to be able to carry on Stephen’s name while helping one of our students with the opportunity to enter the medical field,” Coldiron said. “Any time a student receives the means to further their education it’s a great thing for the student and the family.”

Coldiron, 38, has been principal at Raceland-Worthington since 2005. He resides in Raceland with his wife Andrea and their two sons Clay and Cade. For his continued support of the OLBH Foundation, Coldiron is February’s Donor of the Month.
